Question
4.) What are the unique properties of water that make it necessary for life? How do changes in the hydrological cycle affect ecosystem function? Climate change?
5.) How can mankind supply the freshwater to support its population’s needs? Where do greater Boston residents get their water? Where does this water go? With what affect on coastal ecosystems (Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay)?
6.) What are some types of water pollution? Where do they come from? What do they harm? How can we “fix” this problem?
Explanation / Answer
4) The most important property of water is dissolving power. It dissolved many life supporting nutrient in it and make life possible on the earth.
Climate and hydrological cycle are strongly coupled with land surface . If there will be any disturbance in hydrological cycle ; it also affect the land surface and so ecosystem. Eg-less precipitation lead to drought like conditions.
5) There are many ways to supply fresh water like by pipe connection; water reservoir ; purified waste water etc. Greater Boston residents get their water mainly from Quabbin reservoir which is the greatest reservoir in Boston. There are 3 more major reservoir.
If these reservoir are not maintained well they lead to less water for precipitation as they are inland reservoir. So affect Boston harbor and massachusetts bay.
6) The type of water pollution depends upon the source from where it come. Some are as following- Surface water pollution; Ground water pollution microbial pollution oxygen depletio pollution etc.
They firstly harm only water bodies but in the long run they affect marine life as well as whole climate.
We can fix such problems by making stringent laws at international as well as local level and so it should be properly implemented on ground.
Also spreading awareness about how to conserve our climate and sustainable use of it also be effective.
