Question

The final question reads: "What do you think it would change to begin to extend the moral calculus to other animals in this way?" This question means, 1. If we acknowledge that animals can experience pleasure and pain, happiness and suffering- and if we then include their experience in our moral thinking--what would we have to change in our lives? What current practices would have to be changed, and why? Also discuss: 2. Do you agree that we should include animal experience in our moral thinking? Why or why not? And if so, what should we be willing to change about our actions to show moral concern for animals? Be specific. Answer both questions in detail

Explanation / Answer

2. Animal experience should be considered in moral thinking. The top group deserves the most moral consideration. The lowest group gets no moral consideration:

Sentient organisms have subjective experinces. Only subjective experiences deserve moral consideration. Self awareness is used as a crtieria for moral status. Self awareness, and, preference to stay alive are used as the criteria. There are certain categories of humans, and, animals that are not self-aware,for instance, people in comas, those with brain defects, and, young babies. Human beings should be kept in high moral category, and, even those not self-aware should be considered. These categories should not be treated as marginal human beings.

Sentient organisms that are self aware:

The experiences involve human values, and, human value judgments. These can be applied to particular cases, and, experiences of organisms. Using this in moral reasoning brings in varied experiences, traits from the moral hierarchy.

Kant & Descartes have worked on the constitution of experience, morality, animal experience, & the doctrine of animal machines & behaviour.
