Question

6. (20 points) The following model is a simplified version of the multiple regression model used by Biddle and Hamermesh (1990) to study the tradeoff between time spent sleeping and working and to look at other factors affecting sleep. The estimated model is: sleep = 3638.25-0.148 × totwrk-11.13 x educ + 2.20 age (112.28)(0.017) (5.88) n= 706, R-0.113 where sleep and totwrk (total work) are measured in minutes per week and educ (education) and age are measured in years a. Interpret the coefficient on totwrk. Is there a interpretation for the intercept term? (Hint: There is!) Is either educ or age individually significant at the 5% level against a two-sided alternative? Report the p-values in both cases. Show your work. b.

Explanation / Answer

a. the coefficient of totwrk = -0.148 signify that as time spend onn working increases(decreases) by 1 hour, the time spend on sleeping decreaeses(increases) by 0.148 hours.

The intercepr term gives the average time spent on sleeping but the high value of the intercept makes it completelly absurd.

b. the z-value for edu is: zedu = -11.13/5.88 = 1.892

Thus, pedu = 0.05489 > 0.05 and hence not significant at 5% level of significance.

and,

z-value for edu is: zage = 2.20/1.45 = 1.517

Thus, page = 0.129267  and hence not significant at 5% level of significance.

Thanks!
