Hospitality trade associations often lobby to influence proposed labor related legislation. Given the diversity of opinion that often accompanies proposed legislation that may be controversial, do you think this is a good use of these associations resources? Why?

Explanation / Answer

No it is not good use of these associations resources from the viewpoint of society. The reason is that raising minimum wages is fair. labour standards act of 1938 was also opposed by lobbyists but it did not lead to unemployment . After 1945 there was biggest improvement in living standard of USA which was contrary to what lobbyists were saying in 1930'&1940's.since then there argument remains same but there is neither unemployment nor fall in living standards as predicted by them. Contrary to this claim studies have revealed that as minimum wage increases there is improvement in living standards and no unemployment. One of the reason is that as workers income increases they demand more goods and thus stimulate economy. Even otherwise lobbism is not efficient from the viewpoint of Economics. Also companies like Walmart are offering too low wage. employment at the cost of falling living standards of labour standards is not good given the fact that corporate incomes have increased tremendously. This is causing more and more inequality. Infact inequality is usa is one of the highest in world. The hospitality industry should instead focus on raising productivity, stimulating demand by advertisements etc
