Question

Write an Official Memo to (then) President Franklin D. Roosevelt taking a position, and objectively defending your position, on the interment of Americans of Japanese descent in confinement campus during World War 2. Include one paragraph which examines pa rallels between the treatment of Americans of Japanese descent in 1940’s to modern Americans who practice the Islamic faith. The memo word count should be one page: no more than 350 words. Discussion: one paragraph 200 words

The Question:

Place yourself in the role of deciding whether to place Americans of Japanese descent into internment camps (1940’s) . Recognize how complexity , the war (Pearl Harbor) , and fear lead to th ese events . Review the actual documents and arguments of the United St ates government in favor of incarceration.

Explanation / Answer

Ordering all Japanese-Americans to evacuate the west coast would be a blatant violation of the civil liberty for the American society. It would not only result in the relocation of near about 120,000 people but would also be taken as an act of racism instead of an act of security. More than two thirds of those who will be interned are American citizens and half of them are children. Japanese-Americans are being perceived as a threat almost entirely “because of the physical characteristics of the people” and, there are no conclusive findings that support their involvement in any kind of sabotage or spy activities.

In lieu of this relocation, many individuals and families will be forced to sell some or all of their property, including businesses obviously for an amount substantially lower than their actual worth. Such internment camps exhibits the uprooting of loyal Americans and thwarts the values of liberty and justice that we preach for the American people.
