Question

We modlled a freshwater ecosystem in a 2L jar.

The jar had 2 snails, 2 glass shrimps, duckweed (around one spoon), algae (1ml) and ribbon weed (3-4 leaves)

The expierment was conducted over 4 weeks.

In the second week, one snail was dead and another shrimp was not found at all.

In the second week, there was no algae left.

In the last week, the duckweed and ribbon weed were growing more.

the ph was around 7.5 in the first week and 8.3 in the fourth week.

Salinity increased from 660us/cm in first week to around 850us/cm.

Can you suggest a reason for why did the snail and shrimp die, while the other one snail and one shrimp survived?

Explanation / Answer

At the first week there was 2 snails, 2 glass shrimps, duckweed , algae and ribbon weed in the mentioned freshwater ecosystem. At the end of the second week, 1 snail and 1 shrimp died and in the last week duckweed and ribbon weed grew more. The pH increases from 7.5 to 8.3 and the salinity increases from 660us/cm to 850us/cm.

The reason behind the death of 1 snail and 1 shrimp was the crossed tolerance limit of pH(6.5-7.5) and salinity. They were not habitat to the changing environment. So they could not survive. But with time, as duckweed and ribbon weed grew so the condition became favourable for another snail and shrimp. Therefore another snail and shrimp survived.
