Question
Use the probability distribution given in the table below and consider two new random variables, w= 8 + 1X and V-9+5Y, to answer the following questions Joint Distribution of Weather Conditions and Commuting Times Rain (X0 Long commute (Y 0) Short commute (Y= 1) Total 0.16 0.25 0.41 0.07 0.52 0.59 Total 0.23 0.77 1.00 Compute the mean of W E(W) = (Round your response to two decimal places) Compute the mean of V (Round your response to two decimal places) Compute the variance of W (Round your response to four decimal places) Compute the variance of V (Round your response to four decimal places) Compute the covariance between W and VExplanation / Answer
The mean of w is as
W = 8 + 1X where x = 0.23
So, W = 8 + 1*1
W = 9.
Now mean for V is as
V = 9 + 5Y where Y = 1
So V = 9 + 5*1
V = 14.
Now Varience of W = 9/2 = 4.5 ( where 9 is the mean and 2 is the number of varibles i.e. 2)
Varience of V = 14/2 = 7 ( where 14 is a mean and 2 is the number of variables i.e. 2)
Now Coevariance between W and V = 4.5* 7/2-1
So Coevariance between W and V = 31.5
Now correlation between W and V = 31.5/ (20.25* 49)1/2
correlation between W and V = 31.5/31.5
correlation between W and V = 1.
