Climograph for an unknown location. 1. A State what you can observe directly in the climate graph (Fig. 1). B. What can you infer from the data (soil, plant life, fire, snow, etc.)? Briefly explain your reasoning C. Describe the geographical features (atitude, elevation, proximity to water and mountains, ocean currents, etc.) that would be likely to produce a climate like this. Explain your reasoning.Explanation / Answer
1.
A. The graph clearly shows that the region experiences a mild climate with a comfortable mean temperature of 10.5oC and total precipitation of 1318mm. There are dry summers from June to Septemeber and wet winters from November to February. Rest of the months enjoy moderate rainfall and temperature. The rainfall increases sharply since October and continues until March with the peak in Nov-Dec.
B. We can infer that the region has climatic features similar to that of Mediterranian climate and hence it might exhibit the following features:
Plantlife: Plants will have to bear the dry summer in this region with an average rainfall of around 40mm. Therefore, evergreens like pine, cypress, bay laurel and deciduous trees like oak may be abundant in the region along with fruit trees like grapes, olives etc. Apart from that many herbs and shrubs will be abundant.
Animals: Most forms of common mammals can be found here.
Soil: The chemical weathering is low because of the dry summers and thus the humus content (soil organic carbon) will be lower.
C. As described earlier, such climate can be expected in Mediterranean region which can be found in west coasts of continents between 30 to 45o latitude. The summers are dry but not completely indicating that they might be humid and hence might be coastal. They almost lie between the harsh deserts and the temperate climatic zones and hence experience a mild climate.
