Question
During determination of particle size by the hydrometer method, you used 50 g of sandy soil and recorded the following corrected results in 1 L measuring cylinder in water. First reading (after 40 seconds) silclay 25 g/L Second reading (after 7.72 hours)- clay 10 gL Determine the percent of sand, silt and clay and, textural elass name of the soil from the 7. Textural Triangle? 8. Let us assume that you used different sieves and separated sand, silt, and clay as 120, 60, and 30 grams, respectively. Determine the percent of sand, silt and clay and, textural class of the soil?Explanation / Answer
SILT+ CLAY = 25 GM @ 40S----A 25*100/50 = 50%
SECOND CLAY ( 7.72HRS)= 10 G----B = 20%
RESULTS
THERFORE SILT = A-B = 15 G = 30%
THEREFORE, SAND =100 – A%= 50%
Plotting the data on textural triangular diagram, it is LOAM
2.
Sand= 120g
Silt = 60 g
Clay = 30g
Total = 210g
Therefore % Sand= 120* 100/210 = 57 %
% Silt= 29%
% Clay= 14%
Plotting data on textural triangle , result is sandy loam.
Due to technical difficulties, I am unable to provide the plot. Download a soil textural triangle and plot, if necessery.
