Question

Transported sedimentary debris develops both textural and compositional maturity which is reflected in the characteristics of the eventual rock types. Identify each characteristic below as being... I (for immature) or M (for mature).. and... T (for Textural) or C (for Compositional) maturity Does the descriptive phrase in the list below imply.... I(immature) or M (mature)? And is that maturity level referred to as.... T(textural) or C(compositional)? angular clasts a. _____ b. _____ fine grain size c. _____ d. _____ rock fragments e. ______ f. ______ mixed grain sizes g. _____ h. ______ well rounded grains i. _______ j. ______ all quartz grains k. ______ l. _______ uniform grain size m. _______ n. ______ all clay grains o. ______ p. _______ Consider the dirham Landslide of 1983..... Answer with.... H(for the Head of the slide) or.......T (for the Toe of the slide)..... for that area of the slide with the following characteristics: H(head) or T(toe) a. Horizontal extension _______ b. Horizontal compression ________ c. Dammed the Stroudwater River _______ d. Created folds in the sediment _______ e. Experienced subsidence ________ f. Experienced uplift _______ g. Striated fault surfaces _______ h. Leading edge ________ i. Trailing edge _______ j. Knocked down trees _____ For here in the State of Maine, consider the sequence of Wilson Cycle stages and.. match the sediment type to the appropriate geologic time period.... A (for Cambrian): B (for Ordovician): C (for Silurian): D (for Devonian): E (for Carboniferous): F (for Permian): G(for Triassic): H (for Jurassic) and I (for Cretaceous) a. Which geologic time period would show arkosie sediments in narrow rift basins? __________ b. Which geologic time period would consist of non-marine conglomerate and sandstone deposition? _________ c. Which geologic time period would be dominated by shale and greywacke deposition? _________

Explanation / Answer

5) a - immature because when its angular, it means less transported

b- Textural, because anglular clasts mostly consist of rock pieces from different types of rocks

c-mature, fine graine size is obtain by immense weathering( physical, chemical) for a long period of time.

d-compositional. Due to long period of weathering, its chemical composition get altered and mixed up with different rock types.

e-immeture (same reason as a)

f-textural ( same reason as b)

g-mature(same reason as c)

h-compositional. Since due to mixing of grains sizes, different rocks weather ar different rates. So with different grain size indicate different mineral composition

i-mature. The grains get well rounded due to long transportation.

j- textural. Long transportation doesn't means its composition will change. It dipends on type of rocks. Some rocks get easily altered its chemical composition were as some minerals like quartz won't alter easily

k- immature(refer j)

l- textural

m- mature. To become uniform deposition environment is required which take long time for rocks to get deposited in such a way.

n- compositional. These sediments can be from different source rocks

o-matured. Clay usually form by chemical weathering

p- compositional. Due to chemical weathering, composition will be changed.
