Question

1. Food Deserts

According to Michelle Kaiser (S&K Reader, pp. 210-211): "Yet distorted development and, subsequently, food deserts exist when income disparities continue to widen. Food deserts exist in low-income areas with limited access to affordable and healthy foods" In response, Philadelphia initiated a program to subsidize neighborhood corner stores to provide fresh fruit and vegetables and grocery stores to locate in "food deserts". Cuyahoga County's Board of Health 's Creating Healthy Communities has subsidized Simon's Supermarket to locate in a food desert. Do you agree with government providing subsidies for private markets in food deserts for this purpose?

Explanation / Answer

No, this is because such a government program will only help supermarkets be located in such areas but what it does not take into account is that these areas consist of low income populations who will still not be able to afford supermarket food.

Barely changing location would not help, the government needs to subsidize prices so as to make such low income people afford food and prevent forming food deserts.
