America has around 5% of the worlds population, and 25% of its prisoners. Roughly one in every 107 American adults is behind bars, a rate nearly five times that of Britain, seven times that of France and 24 times that of India. Its prison population has more than tripled since 1980. Studies show that the consequence of three decades of dynamic growth in prison population since the late 1970s, the US has the highest incarceration rate in the world and the annual US correctional combined federal, state and local expenditures on justice related programs crossed $260 billion per year. Suppose you are a senior member in the President’s Chief Economic Advisory Committee and the President asked your recommendations to handle this big prison population problem in the US. What would be your recommendations to the President?

The problem can e addressed in corrective manner if only the root causes are identified and considered.

To handle the growing prioner numbers in United States can be handled by controlling the causes which is making this growth in incarcenation. Lets explore them and simultaneously recommend some measure to handle such causes as follows:

Drug abusive crimes have been the top growing cause that is making this growth substantial. Because of large number of drig addiction and related crimes and abuse makes increment in numbers of prisoners of United. Forst of all the Congress need to be strategic in handling drug problem. Long run and short run steps hsould be taken to eradcate this problem. Such as inculcatiing the knowledge abuse from very strating through education system, then opening up government aid rehabiliation centres etc could be such measures.

One report suggests that almost 50% of total number of prisoners live at or below 50% of the poverty line. Indeed many literature have supported the fact that poverty increases crime rate. Hence appropriate policies should be made to reduce this proportion. Attention should be given to already incarcated once. Removing income disparity and income equality is need of the hour.

Another problem could be understood as growing unemployment. Poverty backed by unemployment make people do unlawful activities like smuglling, fraud , frogery etc leading to increase in number of incarcation. US is an economy that always see a large number of immigrants coming each year. Resources being limited with increasing population causes burden on employment generation. This need to be addressed.
