Question
Use the figure on 6.4 to determine the difference in arrival times, in minutes, between the first P wave and the first S wave for stations that are the following distances from an epicenter:
1000 miles:_____________ minutes 2400 kilometers:______________ minutes 3000 miles:________________ minutes ne dlferénce in the arrival times of the first P wave and the first S wave on a seismo gram increase or decrease the farther a station is from the epicenter? The difference in arrival times the farther a station is from the epicenter. Explanation / Answer
The answer of this question involves nothing but simple subtraction.
The main trick to solve this question is to identify the difference between the arrival times.
First note down the arrival time of s wave from the s wave curve for a certain time, ( it is 6.5 minute for 1000 miles) and that for p wave (which in this case is 3.5 minute for 1000 miles).
Now just simply subtract the two values.
There for we get, difference in arrival time , for
1000 miles is 3 minuits.(6.5-3.5)
similarly
for 2400 miles it is 5.5 minuits (approx)
for 3000 miles it is 6.5 minuits (approx).
