Notice that the question asks you to discuss three authors: A Romantic, a Victorian, and a Twentieth Century writer. When I grade your exam, I’ll give equal weight to these four things: 1. Your discussion of the Romantic author 2. Your discussion of the Victorian author 3. Your discussion of the Twentieth Century author 4. The extent to which those three discussions reflected knowledge of the appropriate background material You can choose to write about any authors on the syllabus; however I would offer three bits of advice: First, make sure each author gives you an opportunity to discuss beliefs and values that were typical of his or her cultural period. Second, make sure that you offer detailed evidence from the literature (The Norton Anthology) to support your description of the author about whom you are writing. Finally, make sure that each author you choose provides you with a substantial amount of evidence; it’s a bad idea to rely too heavily on a single passage in a long work or a single short poem.

Question: Higher Meaning: In all three of the literary periods that we’ve considered this semester we’ve encountered writers who were anxious to identify some source of higher, ideal value—a potentially sacred realm that transcends the merely material world and that provides human life with an underlying sense of meaning. Sometimes this higher realm of meaning is associated with some version of Christianity, sometimes it is associated with a spiritual regard for nature, and sometimes it is associated with an imaginative, creative faculty of the human mind that is understood to have greater authority than ordinary rationality. Sometimes the author’s search for meaning appears fulfilled and satisfying, while other times it seems to end in frustration and failure. Write an essay that explores this concern with higher meaning. You should consider one writer from each of the three periods we have discussed: Romantic, Victorian, and Twentieth Century. Where appropriate, you might consider such issues as the strategies that these authors seem to pursue for attaining higher insight, the value they attach to such insight in their own life or in the general life of society, and the obstacles to such insight posed by the state of our culture or the general conditions of human existence. You should be absolutely certain that your essay includes a detailed and sophisticated account of at least one (and, if appropriate, more than one) work by each of your three authors.
