Question

Your friends are going for a paddle into Elkhorn Slough near Moss landing on Nov. 5th 2017 and have asked you for help figuring out the general tide. Use this site: https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/noaatidepredictions/NOAATidesFacade.jsp?Stationid=9413616

They are launching from ocean pier and going up into the slough, which is inland. They do not mind paddling against the tidal current as they go into the slough but would like to “ride the tide” on the way home out of the slough towards the open ocean. Checking out a map of this area may help you answer this question correctly.

question: **What time would you suggest they start their paddle home? What will be the likely dominant current type during this time and what direction will the current flow towards?

Explanation / Answer

I would suggest them to start their paddle home after the strong afternoon winds have stopped during the ebb tide. Some creeks need a minimum water level of 2metres to be navigable. So that also should be kept in mind. Direction of the current flow needs to be checked before paddling back home.
