18. FLYING BUTTRESS :-

Buttress means a stone/brick structure which is built against a wall so that it can support or reinforce the wall.

Similarly Flying buttress can be described as a structure which has is inclined on a half arch i.e. it flies or extends from the upper part of a wall and carries the thrust of a roof. A vertical pyramidal/conical shape is often seen crowning the pier to add weight and enhance stability of the design. The flying buttress evolved in the Gothic era around 1100s AD when architects in France wanted to build big churches and cathedrals but they them to be full of light and not depressing. But if the walls were mostly glass windows, then they would not be able to hold up the heavy stone roof. This led to invention of the flying buttress. Instead of the buttress being stuck to the side of the building, it formed an arch leading away from the building allowing the outward pressure of the big roofs to be resisted.

Stained Glasses were used for Flying Buttress buildings due to several reasons –

19. Difference between Egyptian and Greek Sculptures:-

1. Objective representation was the primary moto in the Egyptian sculptures. Eg. their art consisted of large heads which lacked any expression. Contrary to this the Greeks aimed at the representation of reality rather than objective. Expressions were given the primary importance to bring out the true emotions of human beings.

2. Greek Sculptures were liberal, i.e. they did not follow strict rules/legacies while building the sculptures While Egyptians followed very strict rules and regulations regarding art and did not have any freedom in this perspect.

3. Egyptian Sculptures portrayed their kings to honor them and believed that they have come from heaven. On the other hand the Greek artists created their art inclining more towards philosophy.

Renaissance means re-birth, it was a transitional movement in 16th century in Europe. There was revival in thinking, reasoning, observation and experimentation for every action or statement behind churches and Popes. This was the time when masters in each subject rose. E.g. Leonardo da Vinci, a famous artist got so popular with his fantastic paintings.

Renaissance is a cultural and historical concept in which there has been a renewed interest in Classical Antiquity and the flourishing of art which distinguishes it from the middle Ages. As Middle Ages is a period defined as lasting from the end of the ancient world to the beginning of the early modern era. The differences were in peoples - Individualism, humanism, art, realism example Novel or Comedy and Maecenas.

Renaissance art is represented as a form focusing on Christian religious imagery using the ancient influences of Greek and Roman art. These arts were often both scientific and creative. Painters created new oil paint blends, allowing the innovation of oil-on-canvas. Sculptors rediscovered techniques and created their own innovations for more realistic works.
