Question

Suppose that the government does a better job of enforcing federal and state laws against sexual harassment in the workplace so that on-the-job sexual harassment is eliminated. Imagine the following world: before stepped-up enforcement most sexual harassers are men, most victims are women, some firms have a reputation for harassment and some do not, there are men and women working for both firm types, and there are some women who could work but who are out of the labor force. Discuss the consequences of the enforcement for workers. What happens to the employment and wages of men and women? Are women better or worse off? What about men?

Explanation / Answer

I think after the enforecment, more women will join the labor force as they will feel more secure at the workplac. However, employers will feel discouraged to hire more women as they will attract more potential sexual harrassment cases by emplying more women. Therefore, incfeases supply of women workers and decreased demand for women workers will increase unemployment of women. However, this will decrease employment of men as more men will be hired to bridge the gap.

Also, enforcement will increase cost of companies, which will put a downard pressure on the wages of men and women. Therefore, wages of both men and women will decrease.

I think finally both men and women will be worse off. Men will earn a lower wage. Women will have less jobs and lower wage.
