Question

Given the current economic conditions, many American society members are facing tremendous obstacles – both financially and emotionally. They need help. However, there are a multitude of barriers preventing them from accessing the help they need. Discuss the internal and external barriers that prevent people from finding and using human services. Of the many barriers presented in your textbook, choose (2) internal and (2) external to discuss. Why do you think these barriers exist? What are the strategies to overcome them?

Explanation / Answer

There are number of barriers to gain the helps during the difficult times. These barriers can be classified into two categories namely internal and external. The barriers which are created by thee individual himself in his mind are termed as internal barriers and these barriers do not allow him to take the help. While the environmental barriers can be seen as the external barriers.

The inability of a person of not experiencing the event that he is in need can eb seen one type of internal barrier. While the other barrier is the stigma and judgment which is developed once the help is received.

In my opinion, most of us avoid the existence of the problem like smoking , drinking. This is mainly due to the fact that these issues are developed so slowly that we are not able to traete them as a feasible problem. In order to help others recovering from these typees of issues, I would like to highlight on the amount and frequency of these issues. When these points will be highlighted then there is a greater probability of these individuals to become upset but over a period of time, they will start realize the existence of the issue.

If someone is quite aware about these issues, then he will definitely try to avoid addressing these issues in public in order to protect his social image. This issue can be resolved by expressing the affected individual that there will be no harm to their social prestige f they address these problems, In fact it will add to their social acceptability.

Selection of suitable program and the cost of service can be the two main external issues creating barriers in this regard.

There are some special events where finding the correct plan is quite difficult. If a person is affected by the drug dependency issue, then finding rehab is quite a task as there can be number of alternatives o may not be any. This issue can be helped by explaining the affected individual that the ultimate goal of all these plans is to get rid of the habit. Having a difficult choice is better than having no choice.

A lot of rehab centers are extremely expensive. I would help this barrier by looking into different payment options or government assistance. Also, it is important to weight the cost versus the outcome. Is $10,000 going to be worth it once you or a loved one is clean?
