Question

1.Two types of margins can be defined as ____________ and __________ margins.

2.Which of these margin types would you expect to find a trench that parallels the continent?

3.Abyssal plains usually form seaward of which type of margins?

4.What are some characteristics of a continental shelf?

5.What are some of the characteristics of a continental slope?

6.Study figure 18.9 (Southern California’s Continental Margin). What are the linear features called that you see running across part of the shelf and slope seaward?

7.What is the average abyssal plain depth your book provides in figure 18.5?

8.An active margin lacks a _________ and ____________. These margins are associated with _________ plate boundaries.

9. How deep are oceanic trenches…give a range?

10. Name a few mid-oceanic ridge systems:

11. New rocks formed at rift valleys are a type of igneous rock called ______________.

12.What conditions do reefs typically form under?

13. What are the three main types of reefs?

14. Which of these reef types would represent a later stage reef?

15. What is the main difference between terrigenous and pelagic sediment?

16. Most oceanic crust is young, less than _______ million years old. This was surprising to some because the age of the earth is __________.

17. Major lines of weakness that cross the mid-oceanic ridge at right angles are termed ________. Where earthquakes occur the zone is termed a _________ fault. This zone is located between _________.

Explanation / Answer

Answer:1

There are two types of margins : a) Constructive margin- where new oceanic crust are forms b) Destructive margins- where old oceanic crust submerge into another plate.

Answer:2

In trench, one plate subducts under another plate. Therefore, it represents destructive marginal regime.

Answer:3

Abyssal plains are associated with constructive regime because two plates diverge from each other and fromation of new oceanic crust occurs.

Answer:4

Continental shelf are associated with continental landmass and dip with low angle (~ 0 to 3 degree). Generally associated with terrigenous sediments.

Answer:5

Continental slope are also associated with continental landmass and dips with more angle than continental shelf such as 3 to 12 degrees. And associated with less terrigenous sediments.

Answer:9

The oceanic trenches are deeps with range from few metres to several kilometers, upto 10 km such as mariana trench which approximately 11 km deep.

Answer:10

There are several mid oceanic ridge sytems which are active today such as mid- Atlantic ridge, South western Indian ridge, South eastern Indian ridge, Juan De Fuca ridge etc.

Answer:11

The rocks formed in continental rift systems are Alkanline rocks.

Answer:12

Reefs generally forms under shallow water area and temperature ranges from 10 to 25 degree celsius.

Answer:13

The three main types of reefs are fringing reef, barrier reef and atoll.

Answer:14

Atoll would be represent the later stage of reef.

Answer:15

Terrigenous sediments are sediments which derived from land and found over continental shelves and slope whereas pelagic sediments are found on oceanic floor such as abyssal plain.

Answer;16

Mostly oceanic floor are younger than 150 million years, whereas age of earth are 4.6 billion years.
