Question

See Earth Revealed Series video # 6 (Plate Dynamics) at: http://www.learner.org/vod/vod_window.html?pid=317 and the course textbook to answer the following questions.

Volcanic island arcs and continental volcanic arcs form at which type of plate boundary: Convergent or Divergent or Transform?

The Mid-Atlantic Ridge (a segment of the Mid-Ocean Ridge) and the African Rift Valley are two examples of a Convergent or Divergent or Transform plate boundary, because two plates are pulling apart from each other.

Which type of Earth’s crust is denser: Continental crust or Oceanic crust?

Lithospheric plates “float” atop a semi-ductile (putty-like) layer in the upper mantle called the _______________________.

What is convection, and how does convection help plates move away from mid-ocean ridges toward subduction zones?

Explanation / Answer

Volcanic island arcs and continental volcanic arcs form at which type of plate boundary: Volcanic island arc- convergent boundary. Continental volcanic arc - convergent boundary. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge (a segment of the Mid-Ocean Ridge) and the African Rift Valley are two examples of a Convergent or Divergent or Transform plate boundary, because two plates are pulling apart from each other -- divergent plate boundary. Oceanic crust is denser than the continental crust as the oceanic crust is subjected to the consolidation process over years. The layer is called asthenosphere which is below the lithosphere and makes the layer above to float and move.
