Question
Based on your answers to the pre-questions, formulate a hypothesis and predicted speed rank the experiment using the If/then format: (table above) for Results Table Distance diffsed Rate (mm/min) Molecularweight,g/moll-diameter(mm)--di idem nb 30- Pp MO Cz Questions uret he dres had the fasts rat is he eye molecus o pedl yvas tne Slovvest to difese, because account for this result? 2. Based on your data, which of the dyes had the slowest rate of diffusion? What properties of the dye molecules account for this result? 3. Did the results support or reject your hypothesis? If the results supported your hypothesis, describe your reasoning. If the results rejected your hypothesis, consider possible reasons that the outcome was not what you expected. 5. Draw on concepts that you learned from the other activities in this lab to describe ways in which this demonstration would be found lacking if it had been intended as a published scientific study.Explanation / Answer
Diffusion is the net movement of particles in a medium resulting from the random motion of individual particles. The random motion is highest in gas and lowest in solid. The speed with which a particle diffuses in a medium i.e the diffusion rate is determined by many factors, one of them being molecular weight of the particle. The speed of diffusion is inversely proportional to the square root of the molecular weight i.e heavier the particle, slower will be its rate of diffusion.Keeping the medium same, particles with lower molar mass will have higher diffusion rate than particles with higher masses. Here,in the problem,Congo red has the highest molar mass (694.68 g/mol) while potassium permanganate has the lowest molar mass (158.07 g/mol).So theoretically, congo red should be the slowest to diffuse as it has the highest molar mass while potassium permanganate should have the fastest diffusion rate owing to lower molar mass.
P.S:Why does your table show distance diffused by PP as 0? PP should have the highest diffusion rate. Please check for errors in your calculation.
