Question
9. Hume-Rothery rules ( Hume-Rothery's rules are necessary but are not sufficient for materials to show unlimited solid solubility) -1.5 Hume-Rothery rules (listed in the order of importance for making a decision) - Size factor Crystal structure - Valence - Electronegativity For ionic radii choose a coordination as close as possible to coordination of Mg in MgO crystal structure Check which of the following metal oxides can make solid solutions with MgO Valence Size factor Crystal Electronegativity Comment on forming solid solution (yes or no) structure Zn SrExplanation / Answer
hume rothery rules are rules that defines the condition under which an element could dissolve in a metal.there are two rules:
1.substitutional solid solution rules
2.interstitial solid solution rules
first one deals with:
1 atomic radius of solute and solvent which should not differ by more than 15%
2 crystal structures of both must be similar
3 solubility which is based on valency.....both have same valency....
4 electronegativity that too should be similar
likewise rules apply to second type too.
so according to size factor zinc and cobalt can form solid solutions with magnesium .
