Due at the beginning of the lab period, Reading Assignment form Zubrick, 9th ed.: Standard Reflux pp. 201-204. Drying Agents pp. 81- 83.Clamping a Distillation Setup pp. 157-161, and Clipping a Distillation Setup pp. 161-163; and the Compound W Project, GSU Laboratory Manual 1. What is the purpose of the condensing column in the reflux setup? . In organic chemistry, liquids can be "dried". What does the word "dry" mean in that context? What is the potential problem associated with finely powdered drying agents? Sketch a simple distillation setup and label each part, including the heat source. Indicate where the setup should be clamped to a ring stand for support, and where a plastic clip should never be placed. Use the back of this page if necessaryExplanation / Answer
Question 1)
The purpose of the condensing column is to prevent the solvent from boiling away. As vapor rises from the boiling column into inside of the reflux condensor, it is cooled by the jacket of water.
Question 2)
Here the word dry means that several organic compounds have water as an impurity in it. And his impurity can cause side reaction, ao drying the liquid means eliminating the water impurity.
