Reaction Mechanisnm This s helow. This particular substitution is called the acid catalysed Sul mecha showmmon mechanism in organic chemistry and you will study it in lectures. substitution reaction and it is a com plex reaction that occurs via a series of steps. as fast HsC_ H3C CH3 CH3 H20 slow rate determining step H3 CH3 CI- CH3 CH3 Questions 1. Which is the limiting reagent in this reaction, +-butyl alcohol or hydrochloric acid? Explain. 2. In the initial isolation of t-butyl chloride from the reaction mixture, what is the purpose o each wash: (i)saturated sodium bicarbonate (include the equation for the reaction involved); (ii) water; (ii) saturated sodium chloride. 21

Explanation / Answer

The limiting reagent (or limiting reactant, LR) in a chemical reaction is the substance that is totally consumed when the chemical reaction is complete. The amount of product formed is limited by thisreagent, since the reaction cannot continue without it.

as hcl is present in excess so here LR is t-butyl alcohol.

Q2(1)Aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution is added into the organic to neutralize the acidic medium that caused by concentrated hydrochloric acid added. Since sodium bicarbonate is an alkaline solution.

NaHCO3(aq) + HCl(aq) --> NaCl(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2  (g)

(2)During the isolation of the n-butyl bromide, the crude product is washed with sulfuric acid, water, and sodium bicarbonate to remove any remaining acid or n-butyl alcohol.

(3)The two layers are formed second time due to the formation of water in the neutralization. The sodium chloride is highly soluble in aqueous layer which is being discarded together with aqueous layer. Another portion of 6mL of saturated sodium chloride solution is introduced into the separatory funnel, to isolate the organic layer from aqueous layer left and reduce the solubility of the organic layer in water.
