Question
1. You have been employed at a local manufacturing company. In the back of an old storage shed you find a 10 L bottle containing a pure-phase, liquid solvent. On reaching to the back of the shed, you stumble and knock over a broom which falls and breaks the bottle of solvent. Your task is to assess the potential fate of this compound. Describe the environmental compartments you would need to consider to estimate this solvent's long-term fate in the shed (HINT: think about what you might find in an old storage shed and consider where that solvent might ultimately reside). What chemical properties of that solvent will you need to begin estimating that fate behavior (especially with regard to its equilibrium distribution(s) of that contaminant mass spilled)?Explanation / Answer
1. If 10 L bottle of unlabelled solvent is found in an old shed. The bottle accidentally falls and breaks, spilling all of solvent outside. The properties we would check from the environmental point of view are, the appearence, color, odor, density and volatility. As faster it evaporates, stronger would be the effect on the environment. After these the analysis by spectroscopy can be done to identify the exact structure of the spilled solvent. Solubility is yet another important factor which would be considered in the analysis of the unknown solvent.
