WRITING MUST BE CLEAR TO READ!!!
Problem 3.25 Other organic compounds, containing only C, H and O also combust to form only carbon dioxide and water vapor. Glucose, or blood sugar, is an example. Complete and balance the following reaction for the combustion of glucose. CcH 1206 + 02(g) Problem 3.26 When oxygen is in short supply, hydrocarbons may form carbon monoxide, rather than carbon dioxide, as a combustion product. When carbon monoxide is formed in combustion the process is referred to as incomplete combustion, Give the balanced equation for the incomplete combustion of propane.Explanation / Answer
Glucose is C6H12O6 and it contians 6 carbon atoms and 12 hydrogen atoms. During combustion, 6 CO2 and 6H2O atoms are to be produced. So there are 6*2+6*1= 18 Oxygen atoms. But 6 oxygen atoms are there in C6H12O6. So to balance the combustion equation, 18-2=12 oxygen atoms are required. The balanced reaction is shown below.
the combustion of glucose is C6H12O6+ 6O2------->6CO2+ 6H2O
2. propane is an alkane with the molecular formula. The incomplete combustion reaction is
C3H8+ O2--------->3CO+ 4H2O. so there are 3 O atoms in CO and 4 oxygen atoms in H2O. So a total of 7 oxygen atoms are required to be produced. Hence 3.5 O2 molecules are required. Hence the combustion reaction is
C3H8+ 3.5O2------->3CO+ 4H2O.
