2: The purpose of melting point determination is to identify the unkonwn compounds. By taking the unknown solid melting point we can compare it to list of potential solids and their melting point and make a match to identify the solid.

The another purpose of a melting point determination is to estimate the general purity of the unknown compounds, compounds with smaller melting point range is like more in its purity. For a material whose identity is known , an estimate of degree of purity can be made by comparing its melting point with that of a pure sample.

3: Usually crystalline organic compounds are having sharp melting point. Let's assume Unknown compound 'X' is suspected of being identical to some known compound 'A' . If the two are identical , they should have the same melting point. If X and A are identical its mixture also should have same melting point like alone compound, but it may not in all yhe cases. If the two compounds is having same Melting point it may vary with its structure and chemical properties, Thus if A is reported in the chemical litterature to have a melting point significantly different from that observed for 'X' we can be quite certain that X does not have the same structure as A.
