Question
which has the highest vapor pressure?
Which liquid has the highest boiling point?
Explanation / Answer
a) If we draw a line parallel to the y-axis at temperature 50 degree centigrade( you can take any temperature) , then comparing the different liquid we found, diethyl ether has highest vapour pressure than other liquid. Diethyl molecules are not attracted much to each other as compared with another molecule.
b) mercury has a higher boiling point than other liquid due to lower vapour pressure.
The normal boiling point is the temperature at which the vapour pressure of a liquid becomes equal to atmospheric pressure. If the intermolecular forces are small, the liquid has a high vapour pressure.Little heat energy will have to be added to separate the molecules, so the boiling point will be low. While mercury has a low vapour pressure, it has a low boiling point.
