LAB 5 REFLECTIVE EXERCISES Lab Partner Lab Section Date D2 ww gihrn asnerin be preparation of your cereal sample? 2 Do you think you could use the sample preparation procedure described in this lab to prepare samples of fresh fruits, such as apples or oranges, for analysis? If not, how could you modify the procedure to apply it to these types of foods? Explain your answer 3 Compare the data obtained from the nutritional labels on the cereal boxes to your experimental data. Did any of your cereal samples give negative experimental results for minerals that should be present according to the label? If so, offer a possible explanation for this disparity. 4 The detection tests you used in this lab were qualitative in nature. Do you think any of these test procedures could be modified to produce a quantitative result? If so, which ones and what would be measured? Lab 5 Nutritional Minerals in CerealExplanation / Answer
Answer 1)
1) A normal Tap water conains minerals i.e. a tap water consiting of cations like Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+ ,anions Cl-, CO32- ,
dissolved gases like O2, CO2 etc.
These cations and anions may contaminate the sample to be analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Also pH of the tap water is not neccessarly neutral which is neccesary in some analysis.
2) Distilled or Deionized water : This is a pur H2O liquid without any mineral. DW has pH = 7 i.e.Neutral.
Hence DW is used instead of tap water in various analytical experiments.
