Question

Molar Concentrations

1. There is a stoichiometric relationship that exists between the formula for an ionic compound and the number of cations and anions that will be released into solution as that solid is dissolved in water.

a. What is the molar concentration of ClO2- ions in a solution that is prepared by dissolving 3.75 g of Al(ClO2)3 in a total solution volume of 125 mL?

____ M ClO2- ions

b. How many individual ClO2- ions would be present in 115 mL of this solution? ________ individual ClO2- ions

Explanation / Answer

Ans 1 :

a) Number of moles of Al(ClO2)3 = 3.75 / 229.3369 = 0.01635 mol

Each mole of the compound has 3 moles of ClO2- ions.

So 0.01635 mol of the compound will have 3 x 0.01635 = 0.04905 mol of ClO2- ions

So molar concentration = number of moles of ions / volume of solution in L

= 0.04905 / 0.125

= 0.3924 M ClO2- ions.

b)

125 mL of solution has 0.3924 M ClO2- ions

so 115 mL will have ( 115 x 0.3924) / 125

= 0.361 M ClO2- ions
