Heptane, C7H16 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon. Aliphatic hydrocarbons are highly non-polar and are not soluble in any polar solvents. Water (H2O), NaOH, NaHCO3, HCl and H2SO4 are polar solvents. Infact, aqueous solutions of NaOH, NaHCO3, HCl and H2SO4 are completely ionized and the ions exist in solutions. Since heptane is non-polar, heptane will not react with any of these reactants. Infact, heptane doesn’t dissolve in any of these solvents.
Ether (R-O-R’) is an organic solvent and is comparatively less polar due to the non-polar alkyl (R, R’) groups; however, ether is more polar than heptane. Heptane dissolves in ether, but no electron transfers are involved. Heptane dissolves in ether by employing London dispersion forces.
