Question

For this discussion, imagine you are granted a meeting with a top level State or Federal policymaker who is also a Climate change denier. You have 3 minutes to convince this person that climate change is real and needs to be addressed.

What would be your pitch to this official that climate change is real and needs to be addressed? Use what you've learned so far in this course about the research, science policy, and economics of Global climate change and provide a news or scientific article that supports your position.

Explanation / Answer

Answer- Climate change is real, the average surface temperature is increasing very rapidly, the amount of carbon dioxide present is the atmosphere is also increasing which cause warming of atmosphere. CO2 concentration in our modern atmoshpere 400ppm , at the time of industrial revolution carbon dioxide concentration was 280ppm. there is about 40% increase in the amount of Carbon dioxide concentration in the atmoshphere. this is result of anthropogenic and natural pollution. It leads to global warming, climate changes, sea level rise etc.

some vital signs that clearly represented that climate is changing very rapidly are following

1- rise in global surface temperature- due to increased amount of green house gases from various sources the average surface temperature of the earth increased by 1.1 degree celcius from 19 centuary

2- sea level rises- near around 8 inches sea level rised due to warming of the ocean

3- shrinking ice sheets- ice sheets near greenland and Antarctica are shrinking very rapidly due to warming of the earth surface. during the period of 2002-2006, greenland lost 180-250 km3 ice per year and Antractica lost 152 km3 per year

4- warming of ocean- from 1969, the top 700m layer of ocean experienced 0.302 degree celcius warming

5- declining in the thickness of Arctic icesheet

6- Glacial retreating in Major mountain of the world Himalaya, Rockies, Andes, Alaska

7- changes in the intensity and frequency of tropical monsoon

8 changing in the frequescy of hurricane

9- Ocean Acidification- acidity of ocean is increased by 40% because more Co2 is absorbed in the ocean.

Thus we need to addressed these changes and for the sustainable development, go with green energy, conservation of natural resouce, recycling techniques, more aforestration.
