ORGANIC CHEMISTRY 2

I just want someone to verify my work. I worked on it but I'm not too sure if I did it right. If I didin't, can you show me how to do it.

Question: The refractive indeces of water and ethanol will be provided, along with the formula for correcting the measured index and calculating the mole fraction of ethanol. Use these to calculate the mole fraction of ethanol in your distillate.

Given: RI of water: 1.3330 ... RI of ethanol: 1.3616

At the beginning, we used 12% Ethanol, my RI was 1.3591 at 18.8C.

Explanation / Answer

temperature correction for the mixture to get nD at 200C

nD20 = nT + (T-20.0)(0.00045) = 1.3591 + (18.8-20.0) (0.00045) = 1.3591-0.0005 = 1.3586

nmix =1.3586 nA = 1.3330 nB = 1.3616

mole fraction of ethanol XB =(nmix - nA) / (nB - nA) = (1.3586- 1.3330) / (1.3616- 1.3330) = 0.0256/0.0286 = 0.8951
