A mixture containing 45% benzene (B) and 55% toluene (T) by mass is fed to a distillation column an overhead stream of 95% B is produced, and 8% of the benzene fed to the column leaves in the bottom stream. The feed rate is 2000kg/h. 1- suggest the suitable material to fabricate the distillation column. 2-Ideentify the corrosive behavior of chemicals to the selected material and calculate the corrosive allowance for thickness of the column. 3-Explain the suitable maintenance procedure involved in distillation column.

Ans 1 . The suitable material to fabricate the distillation column is assymetric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fibre membrane.

Ans2.PVDFmembrane has been prepared by in situ grafting of spinning solution and provides higher water flux which helps in the distillation process.It has a small tensile strength.

Ans 3. The maintenance procedure involved in distillation column is as follows:-

After the distillation process of benzene- toluene is acheived upto 99% under a optimal operating condition . The distillation should be carried under reduced pressure because both benzene and toluene has a vapour pressure equal to its atmospheric pressure so the liquid will have a very high temperature and we shouldnot heat the distillating column to dryness.
