Question

The half-life of TC, a radioisotope commonly used in nuclear, is about 6 hours. How much of a 5.0 mu g sample remains after 2 days? 0.02 mu g 0.6 mu g 0.8 mu g 3 mu g Which compound has the highest molar solubility in a neutral solution? Agl, k_sp = 8.5 times 10^-17 BaCO_3, K_sp = 2.6 times 10^-9 Fe(OH)_3, K_sp = 2.8 times 10^-39 Zns, K-sp = 3 times 10^-23 Which will change the value of K_sp for silver azide, AgN_3? Adding water to the solution Adding silver ions to the solution Removing azide ions from the solution Increasing the temperature of the solution If solid Na_3PO_4 is added to a saturated aqueous solution of Ca_3(PO_4)_2 what will happen to the concentration of Ca^2+ in solution? It will decrease. It will increase It will be unchanged It will become equal to the PO_4^3- concentration A solution contains 0.002 M Pb^2- and 0.002 M Ag^+ What happens when NaCl(s) is added to bring the chloride ion concentration to 0.01 M? Neither PbCl_2 nor AgCl precipitate Both PbCl_2 and AgCl precipitate PbCl_2 selectively precipitates AgCl selectively precipitates For Agl, the K_sp value is 8.5 times 10^-17 and for [Ag(CN)_2] the K_f value is 1.0 times 10^21 Which statement is true? Agl is completely insoluble in a solution that contains CN^-. Agl is less soluble in water than in a solution that contains CN^-. Agl is more soluble m water that in a solution that contains CN^-. Agl is equally soluble in water and in a solution that contains CN^-.

Explanation / Answer

1. Half life and   rate constant for a 1st order equation are related as

Rate constant (K) =0.693/half ilfe = 0.693/6 =0.1155/hr

From Nt=No*exp(-kt)

K= 0.1155/hr, t= 2 days= 2*24= 48 hours

Nt= 5*exp(-48*0.1155) =0.02 ug. ( A is correct)

2. lower KSp value indicates higher solubility in water. Hence BaCO3 is having higher molar solubility in water .

3, Na3(PO4)2 suppliments PO4-2 as it ionizes 2Na3(PO4)2------> 6Na+ 3PO4-2

So there will be additional to PO4-2 ions added to Ca3(PO4)2. Hence Concentration of Ca+2 decreases because

Ca3(PO4)2 --------> Ca+2 + PO4-2

KSp = [Ca+2] [PO4-2] , since PO4-2 increases, Ca+2 has to be decrease.

4. Ksp is a function of temperature. Hence change in temperature will have an effect of on KSp. Addition of either water or Ag+ or removal of nitride ion will not alter the KSp.
