6. Two condensation polymers are shown below. Which is used as the major component of dissolvable sutures and why? A. The polyamide, because esters are more easily hydrolyzed than amides B. The polyester, because amides are more easily hydrolyzed than esters C. The polyamide, because amides are more easily hydrolyzed than esters D. The polyester, because esters are more easily hydrolyzed than amides

Explanation / Answer

The answer is (D).

Polyesters are more easily hydrolysed than polyamides. The lone pair of electrons over N in polyamides resonates with the adjacent carbonyl carbon and reduces the electrophilicity of the carbon. Therefore, the carbonyl group in polyamides is less reactive.

The ester O atom in esters can also resonate with the C=O group, but O is more electronegative than N and hence will have a higher tendency to retain the non-bonding electron pair while N, being less electronegative, can easily share the non-bonding pair. Therefore, esters are more reactive to hydrolysis.
