Question

My question: does my way to calculate a percent and yield for a product is right ? See details below plz..:: K_2CO_3 (1.04g, 40 mmol) in dimethyl sulfoxide DMSO (30ml) was stirred at room temperate under nitrogen atmosphere for 30 min. To above mixture, carbazole (3.34 g, 20 mmol) and p-nitrofluorobenzene (2.94g, 21mmole) were added in a sequence and then the reaction mixture refluxed at 140 C for 8 hr. Then, the reaction mixture cooled, poured into distilled water (300 ml), and filtered by vacuum filtration. Yellow solid product (5.60 g) was obtained without further purification with a purity of 97.2%:: Weight = 5.60 g Yield = 5.60/(20mmol).(288.32g/mole) * 100 = 97.2%:: Thanks:)

Explanation / Answer

If 288.32 g/mol is the molecular mass of your product and carbazole is a limiting agent then the way you did the calculation is absolutely right. If 288.32 is not the molecular mass of your product then use the correct molecular mass to calculate it
