Question
Each of the following statements is a simplification often presented in beginning-level biology courses that can lead to misconceptions in student understanding. In one to three sentences. address each misconception and indicate a more full and complete understanding of the issue Biological membranes are composed of bilayers of phospholipid molecules. Diffusion requires no energy source. Active transport moves solute particles against a concentration gradient. Active transport requires ATP for energy. The rough endoplasmic reticulum has ribosomes attached to its surface.Explanation / Answer
I will take each sentence one by one and try to resolve the doubts
A) Biological Membranes are composed of lipids and proteins . The lipids and proteins are hydrophobic in nature and help in transportation of organic /non-polar components . Polar components are transferred by the protein bridge between the layers.
B) Diffusion is a spontaneous process where the substance moves according to the pressure gradient . Hence there is no requirement of energy in case of diffusion.
C) In case of Active transportation , The movement of molecules happen from lower to higher concentrations. This happens because of external energy being provided.
D) Active transportanation is not spontaneous process as the transportation is from low to high concentration gradient. So it require energy in the form of ATP to cause the movement.
E) The rough Endoplasmic Reticulum has ribosomes on their surface which are responsible for production of proteins in the cell.
