Question
8) Your laboratory has received a contract from the No More Trash Recycling company to analyze the incoming plastics from local recycling centers. In order for the plastic recycling to be economical and useable, the plastics must not be contaminated by certain wastes. You have been commissioned by your supervisor (with the promise of a pay raise for a good job) to determine what instrumentation is needed to do the job. You have a budget for three new instruments.
The contaminants that are of concern are....
1. Organic pesticides (small halogen or phosphorous containing molecules)
2. Oil residue (organic hydrocarbons)
3. Chromium and nickel contamination
List the three instruments that you believe you will need to quantitate the amount of these contaminants and briefly explain why you choose that instrument.
Explanation / Answer
8) recycling of plastics afer removal of contaminants
The contaminants can be analyzed quantitatively using the following instruments.
1. Organic residues (small halogen or phosphorous containing molecules) : Mass spectroscopy can be used to identify and quantify these compounds. Mass analysis would tell exact molar masses of the contaminant and intensity is used for quantification.
2. Oil residues (organic hydrocarbons) : Can be quantified by using gas chromatography instrument. Hydrocarbons are volatile and can be analysed easily by this instrument.
3. Chromium and nickel contamination : can be quantified using atomic absorption spectroscopic instrument. This gives meal analysis even If the concentration is in ppm level.
