Question
6) In each case below, indicate which beaker will have a higher concentration of copper ion (Cu2+). Explain your choice, using chemical equations where appropriate.
a) Beaker 1 contains CuBr2 (Ksp=5 x 10-9) and Beaker 2 contains CuCl2 (Ksp=1.9 x 10-7). You may ignore activity coefficients.
b) Beaker 1 contains CuCl2(s) in water and Beaker 2 has CuCl2(s) in 0.01 M NaNO3. Assume that the only important equilibrium is the dissolution of CuCl. Do not ignore activities
c) Beaker 1 contains Cu(OH)2 in a pH 3 buffered solution and Beaker 2 contains Cu(OH)2 in a pH 7 buffered solution. You may ignore activity coefficients.
d) Beaker 1 contains a solution of 0.1 M Cu(NO3)2 dissolved in water and Beaker 2 contains a solution of 0.1 M solution of Cu(NO3)¬¬2 with 0.001 moles of EDTA added. You may ignore activity effects in this problem.
Explanation / Answer
(6)
(a) Beaker 1
Because, more is the Ksp more is the concentration ions.
(b)
(c) Beaker 1
because it is at pH = 3 which means acidic condition it reacts with the OH- ions coming from Cu(OH)2 and makes more Cu(OH)2 to dissolve.
(d) Beaker 1
beacause in 2nd beaker ther is EDTA which combines with Cu2+ ion to a complex ion. So, free Cu2+ ions will be decreased.
