Question
A teaching assistant was determining the molar volume of nitrogen gas, N_2(g). (MW: 28.0134 g/mol), at standard temperature and pressure. The TA found that 171 mL of gas was collected at 21.0 degree C and 0.988 atm. The TA determined the volume of this gas sample at STP (1.00 atm and 273 K) is________mL Your answer should be expressed with the correct number of significant figures. DO NOT include units. Another TA was working on determining the molar volume of nitrogen gas. This TA found the volume of aExplanation / Answer
Here V1 = 171 ml = 0.171 L
T1= 21.0 C = 294 K
P1= 0.988 atm
And now calculate the volume at STP where the Temperature; T2 = 0C = 273 K
And Pressure ; P2= 1.00 atm
Now we use following expression:
P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2
V2 = P1V1/T1 * T2/P2
= [0.988 *0.171] /294 * 273/ 1.00
= 0.157 L
= 157 ml
