Why are extra calories consumed as carbohydrates stored as fat and not as glycogen?

A. Calories are stored as fat because fat is a more efficient and energy-dense means of storage. B. Calories are stored as fat because fatty acid synthesis requires less energy than synthesis of glycogen. C. Calories are stored as fat because the high level of glycogen in the liver leads to liver failure. D. Calories are stored as fat because fatty acid synthesis does not require oxygen, whereas glycogen synthesis requires a lot of oxygen.

Explanation / Answer

a) Calories are stored as fat because fat is more efficient and energy dense means of storage.

For a healthy life human being requires fat. The amount of the glycogen that is stored in the body is limited, you can survive for short time period (let us say 1 day) on stored glycogen, but with the fat we can survive for weeks. For examples 10 pounds of excess fat, to store the same amount of calories as glycogen would require 20 pounds. Also fat are use to make ATP. Metabolism of fat always require oxygen and fatty acid are degarded to form CO2 in the mitochondria which is removed from the body by breathing.
