Question

Elvis Presley (1935 - 1979, or ...?) certainly created a revolution in pop music. In 1956, his first international big hit, Heartbreak Hotel, was broadcast by powerful radio and television transmitters around the world. Inadvertently, the radio waves of these broadcasts also made it into space and are still propagating, away from Earth, at the speed of light. The Elvis Zone-The Elvis-Free Zone The distance covered in one year by electromagnetic waves, of which light is part, is calculated as: Speed of Light (in meter per second) x Number of Seconds in a Year, so: (3.0 times 10^8) times (365 times 24 times 60 times 60 = 9.46 times 10^15 m or 9, 460,000,000,000,000 m. This distance is referred to as the light-year (LY). Note that this is a misnomer: The word light-year appears to indicate a unit of time ('year'), when in it really refers to a unit of distance (the distance traveled by an electromagnetic wave in one year) How many light years from Earth have the radio waves carrying the sounds of Elvis' first hit traveled? We'll call this the Elvis Zone, and the rest of the universe the Elvis-Free Zone.

Explanation / Answer

distance covered by electromagnetic waves in a year , if it travels by the speed of light = 3*108*365*24*60*60

= 9.46*1015 meter

which is equals to 1 light year

speed of sound waves is = 343 m/sec

than radio wave take time to travel the distance of 1 light year is = 9.46*1015 /343 = 2.758 *1013 second

then the light year is = 2.758 *1013 / 365 * 24 * 60 * 60 = 87456161
