Douse annana. Spring 2017 Activity 7- Wave Propagation and Earthquake Location (100 points A. Wave Propagation 1. (a) From following table of information, draw a graph of distance (x-axis) versus time (y-axis) for P-waves, S-waves, and Sound waves (in air). (15 points) (b) Calculate the propagation velocity of P-, S-, and sound waves? Shows your calculations? (9 points) (c) Assuming that an earthquake is strong enough for you to feel its P- and S-waves, which wave will you feel first? Why? point) Distance (km) Time (sec P-wave S-wave Sound 50 35 50 250 175 1000 500 350 1000 700

Explanation / Answer

a)From the given data,we require 3y axises and one x axis for plotting the given data. The x axis consists of time taken in terms of 50,100,150,200s etc. The first y axis consists of P wave taken in terms of 50,100,150km. The second y axis is taken for plotting S wave in terms of multiples of 35,70km etc. The third y axis is taken for plotting sound wave in terms of units of 10,20,30km etc.

b)Propagation velocity of p wave:-

P wave=50km. Converting it into m,we get 50,000m.

Velocity=50,000/10=5000m/s

For 250km=250,000/50=5000m/s

For 500km=500,000/100=5000m/s

For 1000km=1000,000/200=5000m/s

Propagation velocity of S wave:-

For 35km=35000/10=3500m/s

For 175km=175,000/50=3500m/s

For 350km=350,000/100=3500m/s

For 700km=700,000/200=3500m/s

Propagation velocity of sound wave:-

For 4km=4000/10=400m/s

For 20km=20,000/50=400m/s

For 40km=40,000/100=400m/s

For 80km=80,000/200=400m/s

c)When a strong earthquake occurs,we first feel only the p wave because p waves normally move with high frequency and velocity when compared to s wave. So when an earthquake occurs,p waves are felt first.
