Question
For this assignment, you will write a brief definition of a term in your field. Because each person in the class will be writing about a different term, I will refer to the term here as "Term X."
First, choose a term from your field: your Term X. For example, if you plan to become a particle physicist, you might choose the term "Higgs boson."
Now here's the rhetorical situation for this assignment:
Your parents have some good friends who've known you all your life. You call them your unofficial aunt and uncle. "Aunt" Jane and "Uncle" Jimmy are both extremely proud of you and the hard work you are putting in as a college student preparing for your career. They love to brag about you and the bright future you will have once you finish school. They are both intelligent people who are extremely interested in you and your work, but Jane is a cosmetologist, and Jimmy owns a quick-service restaurant franchise. Neither one knows much about your field, so they sometimes have a tough time bragging about you to their friends because they're not completely sure exactly what it is you're studying.
Recently, Aunt Jane and Uncle Jimmy heard about Term X on a television news show in the context of your career field, so they have emailed you to ask about it. Your task: Write a brief definition of Term X for this non-technical audience in the form of an email.
Remember that, because you are writing email, once you hit "send," your words leave your control. Your proud unofficial aunt and uncle could forward your email to all their friends, copy it into the comments section of a blog they follow, or post it on Facebook. Your words could show up, years later, in some unexpected place, so write with your professional ethos in mind.
Because this is not a real email, you will simply type your text into a Word document and upload the file into the drop box elsewhere in this module. Please scroll all the way down for an example of what your document might look like.

Explanation / Answer
Dear Aunt and Uncle,
Thank you very much for your inquiry about my field. My field is Geology. You can see its meaning in the common dictionaries as: "Geology the science which deals with the physical structure and substance of the earth, their history, and the processes which act on them."
You know well that 'geo' means Earth and 'logy' means 'study'. So, I am studying about this Earth: how is it created, how is it revolving, what has it stored in its middle part, how are climates created and how are the changing, how are rocks and mountains created, how are they eroding, what is earthquake, how can we read earthquakes, how are they affect human life...and you can imagine many such questions in your mind.
To put it in simple words: I am researching about the working mechanisms of our planet Earth. I am also researching about various effects on the planet Earth due to the Natural forces like Air, Water, Sunlight and heat. I am also studying about the atmosphere and changing seasons. I am earning about the various effects of pollutants on our Mother Earth: how humans are spoiling natural resources and how they are polluting them.
Dear Aunty and Uncle, I really love my stydy, because I love Nature very much. I have a natural contentment into my soul when I learn or research something on our Mother Earth.
My study on the Earth is also called 'Earth Science' now-a-days.
Once again, I render my heatrfelt thanks for the love and faith you have on me. I assure you that I will definitely fulfill your wishes. I also assure you that I will blossom as an 'Geologist' and work for the betterment and preservation of our natural resources.
Thank you.
Yours lovingly.
M. Peter.
