Question
Natural gas, methane, is a fossil fuel used in the production of electrical energy, transportation, heating, etc. During the combustion process methane reacts with oxygen gas to produce carbon dioxide gas and water. This reaction is shown below. The heat of reaction (Delta H_xrn) for this process is -890 kJ/mol. Based on the calculated value of Delta H_xrn for the neutralization reaction between sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid in this experiment, could we use similar neutralization reactions for energy production? Why or why not? Use other information from this experiment to help you support your argument (ex. volumes of materials, safety concerns, etc.).Explanation / Answer
NaOH + HCl ----- NaCl + H2O
Delta H(reaction) = -57.1 kJ/mol
Since the DeltaH(neutralization) of the reaction between NaOH and HCl is negative, hence the heat is given out to the system, therefore this reaction can produce the energy
Drawback:
The produced energy from this method is way lesser than energy produced by combustion of gases like methane, hence in order to be cost efficient these reaction are not used for generating energy
Reaction between NaOH and HCl is very vigorous because it is reaction between strong acid and strong base leading to the increase in temperature of the vessel which will inturn can harm the human body
