Question
Steve claimed that coal must have the largest statistical entropy when compared to diamond (crystal, sp3) and graphite (crystal, sp2) because coal has carbon in all forms- sp, sp2, sp3, and unhybridized. Is steve's perspective correct or incorrect? Explain why from the perspective of statistical and/or probability entropy. When comparing between carbon structure, this is most likely true
since the diamond has a pretty ordered strucutre ( due to the high pressure it was during lon gtime of periods, which make an ordered system, i.e. low entropy)
Then
graphite also remain san ordered array of molecules, which is very low probable to occur "spontanoeusly" therefore, entropy is low here as well
For the last cae, the coal has a very random array of structures, meaning it is pretty chaotic/random/disordered, that is, high in entorpy
so
this is true
