b. How many grams of zinc oxide powder should be added to (a given # of) grams of 8% zinc oxide ointment to prepare an ointment containing (a given percent) zinc oxide?(Answer to the nearest tenth of a gram or in other words to one decimal point)

(a)

Neoral oral solution contains 5 mg/mL cyclosporine.

Volume of solution is 100 mL

Given percentage of cyclosporine is 10%. This means 10 mg in 100 mL of solution.

we know 5 mg is present in 1 mL. So, 10 mg will be present in 2 mL

The reamianing will be water.

Volume of water added = 100 mL - 2 mL = 98 mL is added.

(b)

Mass of ointment = 100 g

percentage of ZnO = 8%

So, 8 g of ZnO is present in 100 g ointment.

If they ask to prepare 50% ZnO .

(8+x) / (100+x) = 0.5

x= 84 g of ZnO
