Question

For the reaction: BaSO_4(s) + H_2O(l) rightarrow Ba^2+(aq) + SO_4^-2(aq), determine the effect on the barium ion concentration of: adding more barium sulfate. evaporating some of the water. adding sodium sulfate. adding sodium chloride. increasing the pressure. The K_sp of calcium phosphate is 2.0 Times 10^-29. If a gram of this compound is dropped into a 1000.0 L pool of water, how much of it will dissolve? What is the pH of a format buffer system (K_a = 1.8 Times 10^-4) when using 0.10 M sodium format and 0.15 M of the monoprotic formic acid?

Explanation / Answer

Q1.

BaSO4 + H2O <-> Ba+2 + SO4-2

a)

adding more BaSO4, will favour solid formation... it will icnrease Ba+2 ion until saturation is reached

b)

evaporation of water, increses concnetration of BaOS4, therefore, the Ba+2 willprecipitate the excess until saturation equilibrium is achieved

c)

Addition of Na2SO4 --> increases SO4-2 in solution, so displace equilibrium toward BaSO4 (s)

so Ba+2 decreases

d)

Addition of NaCl --< no effect

e)

increasing Pressure --> not likely to change aquous solution concentrations, so no effect
