Question
The contact explosive NI3 can be made from its elements: N_2 (g) + 3 I2 rightarrow NI3 (g) If you placed 2.24 grams of nitrogen gas into a 3.00 Liter flask at 20 degree C, what would the pressure be? If you now added 81.3 grams of solid iodine and raised the temperature to 87 degree C, so that the iodine completely vaporized (sublimed) but did NOT react with the nitrogen, what would the pressure now be? If you now raised the temperature of the mixture in (b) to 200 C. so that the mixture did react according the reaction above, what would the pressure be in the flask following the complete reaction?Explanation / Answer
a) only N2 is present in the flask. Thus pressure = P N2
pressure = nRT/V
= (2.24/28) (0.0821x293)/3
= 0.614 atm
b) the falsk has N2 at 360K and also I2 at 360 K
Partial pressure of N2 at 360K is calculted as
P1/T1 = P2 /T2
thus P2 = 0.614 x 360 /293 = 0.754 atm
Partial pressure of I2 = (81.3/254) x(0.0821x 360/3
=3.153 atm
Total pressure inside the falsk = P of N2 + Pof I2
= 0.754 + 3.153 = 3.907 atm
c)
The reaction is N2 + 3I2 --------> 2 NI3
0.08 0.32 0 initial moles
0 0.08 0.16 after reaction ( N2 is the limiting reagent)
Thus the pressure = Pof I2 + PNI3
PI2 = 0.08 x 0.0821 x 473 /3 = 1.03 atm
P NI3 = 0.16 x 0.0821 x473/3 = 2.06 atm
Thus the total pressure after reaction = 3.09 atm
